The Deep Space Network.
(Science Week – Day 2!)
One of my favourite uses of the entire Web in the past year: a graphical status overview of the Deep Space Network.
Put together by just a small team of NASA friends, it clearly illustrates that the most famous probes in the solar system are always checking in or being checked in with by one of three ground stations distributed around the Earth – I don’t think I’ve ever seen it completely blank. A recent highlight was its visual obliviation of Cassini into Saturn at the end of its two-decade science mission there.
It’s so nice to just have this on sometimes.
