(Science Week - Day 5!)
My other favourite holiday of the year is the week of WWDC, where Apple shows off some of what they’ve been polishing the previous year. (Other companies do similarly, of course.) And one point of Science Week is just to celebrate amazing achievements – things unimaginable in the past, which are now common in pockets.
Cell phones themselves were a true novelty once. Voice dictation was once amazing to see demonstrated – now it’s expected as a free inclusion and works near-flawlessly in tons of languages. A camera that recognizes a face, let alone having provided effective security for tens of millions of people with no major headlines about a breach or dismantling. All this barely scratches the surface. It’s astonishing.
Today’s link is a simple support article about that last one. It’s a brief overview of their implementation rather than a deep dive, but it’s enough to jar apathy and provoke wonder at the long journey.
